Prunus Royal Burgundy can be considered as the purple leaved version of the extremely popular pink flowering cherry, Prunus Kanzan.

This pretty tree is fairly new to the Barcham range and has proven an extremely desirable addition to our range. The frilly flowers appear in spring and are double pink; the flowers remain on the tree until the dark wine coloured foliage begins to emerge, providing a wonderful contrast between the two.

It is a truly eye-catching effect. In the autumn time the dark leaves turn a clearer red before falling. Prunus Royal Burgundy is a small tree, which differs to Kanzan in that it is slightly less vigorous.

It forms an upright crown at a young age, gradually broadening to a rounder shape at maturity. It will tolerate most soil conditions, however like most cherries; it prefers a well drained soil.

This stunning dark coloured beauty is a real rival to the very popular Prunus cerasifera Nigra, the widely planted dark foliaged cherry. The dark pink flowers and red-wine coloured foliage gives stunning contrast in the spring and makes a great selection for avenue planting. It is best planted against a light or plain background, as this gives the vivid colour exhibited by this specimen the chance to shine.
