Prunus avium Plena is a stunning double flowering form of the Wild Cherry tree, Prunus avium.

The foliage is dark green and typical of cherry trees, emerging after a full throttle display of a mass of brilliant double white flowers in the spring. The autumn foliage is glorious, giving a complementary display of brilliant reds and oranges.

Prunus avium Plena is a fairly large cherry tree which has been cultivated since the 1700s, much like its parent it retains a strong central leader leaving a broadly pyramidal shape that turns more rounded as the tree matures. Like all cherry trees, this double flowering version of a native tree will thrive on most free draining soils. This tree is a wonderful addition to any planting scheme, its display of blossom in the spring never failing to disappoint.

Care should be taken to ensure Prunus avium Plena is planted with the space to accommodate its eventual size, as this beauty is capable of forming a fairly large tree at maturity for a cherry. It is a great choice of avenue tree and works well in a rural setting, where its classic nature enables its ornamental features to deliver their beauty without overwhelming the natural landscape.
