Salix alba Chermisina is the brilliantly scarlet red stemmed variety of the white willow, it is also referred to as Salix alba Britzensis.

This tree has foliage typical for Willow, being narrow in shape and grey-green in colour. The foliage appears early in spring and remains on the tree until late in the autumn.

This willow is notable for having brilliant scarlet red-orange young stems that are most attractive during the winter time.

Salix alba Chermisina forms a mature tree that is more pyramidal in shape than other Willows, the bright red young shoots make it a superb choice for severe pruning and coppicing to form a multi-stem in order to accentuate this feature.

This tree received the Award of Garden Merit in 2002 and is a tough contender that will tolerate most moist soil conditions.  Like most willow, this tree will tolerate extremely wet conditions, including planting in areas that experience regular flooding.

This specimen is a great choice for planting in parkland and also gardens with the space to accommodate its large size and vigorous growth. The bright red young shoots are particularly attractive in the winter sun against a bright blue sky and look fantastic against a dark evergreen background.
