Tilia tomentosa Brabant is a cultivar of Silver Lime introduced to the UK in the early 1970’s.
This tree has large dark green leaves which have a silvery-white underside, providing a stunning contrast and attractive shimmery effect when blowing in the wind. In the autumn time the leaves turn a glorious yellow before falling from the tree.
The floral display of this tree is fragrant, with small creamy coloured flowers appearing in late summer. Tilia tomentosa Brabant is a Dutch clonal selection of the Common Silver Lime which won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002.
It has a more regular and pyramidal shape than the species at maturity, however it becomes equally as large in stature so is best suited to schemes with plenty of space to accommodate its eventual size.
Like all Limes it will tolerate most soil conditions well but does require space to reach its full glory.
This large tree is very versatile, being suitable for urban environments as well as parks and very large gardens. Like many Lime trees this fantastic tree makes a perfect choice for avenue planting and does not suffer from aphid infestation, so is a useful choice of Lime for paved areas.
