Ulmus Americana Princeton is an exciting new prospect for Barcham Trees, offering the opportunity to reintroduce the stunning tradition of Elm planting back to the UK.

This tree is an extremely exciting addition to our range, having a proven track record of resistance to Dutch elm disease. It is a vigorous tree which has large leaves that are serrated at the margins, bright green in colour, turning to a brilliant golden yellow in the autumn time.

Ulmus Americana Princeton has been tested in two studies of Dutch elm disease, conducted by research geneticists at the USDA National Arboretum. This Elm was highly successful, scoring top for tolerance and recovery to huge doses of the most virulent strain of the disease.

It has recently been planted as an avenue outside the White House in Washington and was first planted in the UK for Prince Charles at Highgrove. In the USA avenues of the Princeton Elm have been recorded as being over 80 years in age and it derives from parents of 287 years old.

Ulmus Americana Princeton is a tough and extremely fast growing tree that will thrive in all soil conditions, even tolerating a coastal breeze. As a young tree this Elm has a rounded shape; however it later develops into a spreading and open crown at maturity.

This stunning large elm tree has the potential to put Elms back on the map in the UK; they are suitable avenue planting and make stunning specimens planted on their own. Their vigorous growth makes them a good choice for screening trees and boundary planting however care should be taken to provide them with enough space to reach their full glory.
