Olea europaea is a small olive tree that has small leaves which are leathery and grey-green in colour. Small white flowers appear in the summer time and in the right climate can be followed by juicy olive fruits.
The olive tree, Olea europaea has been historically cultivated for the oil extracted from the fruit "the olive" as well as the fruit itself in the Mediterranean for hundreds of years, with many existing olive groves seen in Europe being ancient. At maturity, olive trees do not reach great height, developing a rounded crown with an extremely gnarled bark and general appearance.
Being a stalwart of the Mediterranean, Olea europaea prefers a well drained soil and can tolerate fairly arid conditions. Olive trees are only hardy in the milder areas of Britain and as such are usually best confined to the south of the UK. In other areas, container cultivation is an option that offers the opportunity to move the tree indoors over winter, for example a green house or conservatory.
This pretty evergreen olive tree is a great choice for sunny positions in gardens, and can be a useful option for screening above the fence line. A biannual hard prune in April can be beneficial to maintain a bushy and full crown; this prompts the tree to react with very vigorous growth.
